"A Glass Team"
Scott and Laura Curry
The Curry’s have been a “Team in Life’ since their
marriage in 1982. Both born in Tacoma, Washington there were no early
indications that they were to become a glass team. While Scott was still
employed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, it was a PBS documentary on
glassblowing that provided the spark that would eventually re-direct their
lives.
The Curry’s first studio was built entirely with recycled materials. With
the help of a friend Scott learned the skills that enabled him to make all
his own tools used in glass blowing.. This experience working with metals is
evident today in the Curry designs as they move forward in the artistic
combination of glass and metal.
In 1986 Scott attended Pratt Fine Arts (Seattle WA) studying under Martin
Blank. This fueled his growing passion for working with molten glass and was
a catalyst for further creative experimentation.
Since 1989, Scott and Laura have been a “Glass Team” at their studio and
home in the beautiful Puget Sound area of Washington, where weaving family
life with their three children and glass careers is a daily routine.
“Glass is a sensual medium, but can also be very cruel. It is limiting in
its fragility and sensitivity to the elements as it is being created, but it
also gives one a chance for great self expression in both form and color.”
Most recently they have brought
David Schoales, former major installer for
Dale Chihuly, aboard to
test the waters of architectural glass and as of far have shown success and
progression towards their final goal. So as the team grows they learn and move forward as leaders in
the glass industry.
